LinkedIn is a great way to connect with old co-workers and bosses, current and satisfied clients and other professionals that you know or want to reach out to, but because there is a lack of usage of your profile you may not be satisfied with the results you are getting. Maybe you get a request a week, maybe your profile is being looked at by a few people a day, but you know you should be drawing more eyeballs.
Here are some ideas to hopefully get you that traffic you are looking for and build your engagement and LinkedIn community both on your professional personal page and for your business.
Do you have an image?

Too many accounts are faceless. Your name probably isn’t that unique and in order to allow people to not only find you, but to also know it’s definitely you; add a picture of you!
Be memorable
Your profile should be interesting, intriguing and most of all unique enough for someone to remember you.
When you request to add someone to your LinkedIn community, be memorable. Write an actual message; where you met them, when you worked together or why you wish to connect.
Post updates daily
Post updates that either pertain to your business/ expertise or you think would interest your connections. Share blog posts you’ve written and encourage conversation.
Join groups

Join groups that once again pertain to your expertise, business and interests.
Share information that is relevant to the groups you join.
Become a leader in your industry with LinkedIn answers
Answer questions asked by other LinkedIn users.
Create a business page
Does your business have a page? If not, make sure you create one and add your employees. Post business and industry updates and, start building a community around the page. Invite clients to join and stay connected with the business.
Utilize LinkedIn Applications

Adding different applications will make your profile interesting, People will stay on it longer and there’s a good chance that they will return in the future.

The profile picture is very important in this LinkedIn profile. It should give good impression. Posting updates regularly is a good thing and being connected with others as well is a good thing to be noticed.

I created my account a year ago on LinkedIn. And really don’t know how to use it as a marketing tool. It seems that the industry which I am interested in have no place on LinkeIn. So I decided to make it as a place where I can drop my backlinks.
Very useful information. I have knowledge of other things, but I haven’t use any linkedin application. Can you share some useful linkedin applications and how to use them.
I use Tripit to track my trips, amazon to let people know of good books I’ve read, wordpress to display my latest blogs, events to promotoe those I am organizing and/ or attending.
I did signup with Linkedin to promote my site, with mixed results. It’s time consuming to keep it update and add contacts. I am sure, as your article states, it’s a useful tool if taken advantage of.
I get invites all the time to join LINKED in…I guess I will look into it. A lot of people seem to have it. I just dont belive in joiing something if I can t see any benefit from it. I mean those things take time to fill out (profiles etc).
