Is It All About The Numbers?

01 Is It All About The Numbers?

I have been giving a lot of thought to this post today and I am stumped.

I have been noticing on sites such as Facebook and Twitter that people will friend or follow you and do one of a few things:

1. Interact as they should

2. Ignore everything you say

3. Hide all content so you can’t see it

4. Unfollow you after you follow them

This makes me think that these people are only about the numbers.

What are your thoughts on it?

Do you partake in Social Networking only to have one-sided conversations?

Numbers don’t mean crap without interaction. It may appear that someone with large numbers is popular or has something valuable to add but all you have to do is read their comments or stream to find out exactly what they are all about.

I am not sure.. let me go ask @8ball_

Seriously, I totally agree with your thoughts Kim. It also has become apparent to me that the larger their following the less likely they are to interact with others outside their “circle”.

LOL I wonder what @8ball_ would have to say! Also yes, it is becoming TOO common for people to forget how they got where they are today Online and that is by being social to build the following. Thanks for commenting Dawn

You are so right, Kim!

I was thinking about this numbers thing too. So, I decided to make an experiment.

I downloaded a database of random emails on the internet, copied-pasted 1k of them into invitation-by-email list on Facebook and sent the invitations with a text “Please, invite me”

What do you think happened? 700 of them accepted me as friend within 7 days. Really, disappoinitng number. Makes me thinking 70% of all people are either bots or spammers.

And that’s how it works today

To be fair with what you did Faustino, social media IS about networking and meeting new people. There is a chance that out of that 700, a few seriously are looking to engage and connect with different individuals. I myself friend people even if I do not know them irl.

I agree Kim, but there are more civilized ways to find people that interest you in terms of communications or, say , your company’s product. I mean engaging people into groups and fan pages, but not random friending of people that you don’t know. I understand what you’re talking about, but a chance that 700 people out of 1000 are interested in communicating with me is too small
