A few years ago I can remember sitting down at 7:00 pm, ready to watch my favorite shows when a commercial for the local pizza place would pop on the tube making my mouth water for it’s cheesy goodness. Chances are if I was influenced by that commercial, I had not yet eaten and would 9 times out of 10 order the pizza. Does this sound like something you would do?
What about watching TV and seeing a commercial for Applebees, Ponerosa (is that place still around?) or any other local restaurant and actually planning to go out to eat because you were influenced by their special, new item or new location? I know that I’ve been there, done that!
Have you ever based what you are having for dinner by what coupons you got in the mail? Oooh look, Pizza Hut has a great deal and I have a coupon, let’s order! Sound familiar?
What about this scenario?
Not sure what to have for dinner so you log onto Facebook. Look up some local restaurants and see what their specials are. Maybe you see a Tweet about a pizza special and instantly have a watering mouth and are mentally adding the toppings and creating your order?
Do you do that? Do you check Twitter, Facebook and the companies websites now instead of clipping coupons or seeing the commercials on the TV? I know I do, but here’s the thing. I don’t watch TV on my TV anymore. I catch all of my shows Online when I have the free time to watch them. I bet many people do this.
Here are some awesome examples of how businesses in the food industry have embraced Social Media and are giving customers like you and me and whole new way to decide what our next meal will be!
How often is your next meal decided by specials you see Online?

Great post! I’ve actually decided what to eat at times by seeing what others are having for dinner! Someone will tweet something like – “Time for dinner and I think I’ll have…..” – Then I’ll think….”Hmmm, that sounds kind of good.” LOL!
I can safely say – and I’m sorta thankful for this – that social media has not changed how I eat, not yet. Part of this might be that while I consume lots of media, much of it is mainstream. I end up reading the nytimes more often than not, or publications like it, and their ads or sense of value sticks with me. I imagine if social media took the place of regular media for me things might be different, esp. if I saw discounts and promotions involved.

To be honest, more than anything my social interactions with resturaunts are almost always local mom and pops. There is a local pizza joint and a local Hot dog stand (chicago style baby) that regularly work facebook and if I notice they are having a sale I am more like to check them out. It is also much easier to give an establishment feedback over a FB or twitter post than it is face to face which is kinda nice.
