Father’s Day is about honoring the Father figures in our lives. When I was a child we would make my Dad special gifts and dinner. This is the 3rd Father’s Day that my family is without my Dad, but that doesn’t mean that I can’t pay tribute to a man that taught me so much while he was here on earth.
When I was a child I swore my Dad was the Frugal Gourmet. Remember him from PBS in the 80′s? My Dad resembled him so much and oddly enough would arrive home from working his second job at White Hen, or Hen White as I called it, on Saturday evenings. I always wondered why my Dad was able to cook beautiful meals on TV, but at home he could barely make us mac and cheese.
My Dad might not have been a chef, but he was an amazing man. He was in the Air Force before he met my Mom. He played the guitar and had a wonderful voice. My Dad had many other talents, but those are just a few that stick out. Over his lifetime he collected hundreds upon hundreds of celebrity and politicians autographs. He was active in Church and loved the Lord. If he met you on the street, he would have talked your ear off.
Unfortunately life was not always the best for my Dad. When I was younger my Dad began getting sick a lot due to his diabetes. He overcame back surgeries, several heart attacks and bipass surgeries, amputations on both of his legs and skin cancer (to name a few). My dad was strong though. He pushed through his bad moments with a joke and a smile on his face (after some subtle complaining LOL)
I would like to believe that some of my curiosity and addiction to the Internet came from my Dad. Although he would constantly be frying his computer or getting viruses, he loved the Internet. He tried building some AngelFire.com sites for Christian Midis, my Moms artwork and a tribute to the Armed Forces that were serving overseas and they were pretty awesome considering it was all new to him. I found out on one of my trips to visit my family that he had even created a Second Life account naming his Avatar something like ILoveLucy Ball. LOL Yep, that’s my Dad. He loved I Love Lucy, Rosanne and CSI so it was only fitting to name his Avatar after one of his favorite shows. I still laugh about it. He never actually made it into Second Life because his computer was too slow, but he tried.
I miss my Dad everyday and it isn’t just on Father’s Day that I remember him. I cherish every memory of him every day of my life. He is and always will be in my heart.
To all of you Dads out there, you truly mean the world to your children whether or not they tell you.
Happy Father’s Day!
