To Follow or Not To Follow

01 To Follow or Not To Follow

365 Days of Blogging Challenge | Day 18

Do you follow everyone that follows you on Twitter?
Do you feel obligated to return the follow?
If you answered yes, I would like to know why you do it?
Is it because of the numbers?
Is it because you are afraid to lose followers?Picture 38 300x216 To Follow or Not To Follow
It’s only natural to answer yes to this, but I can tell you that you are destroying your own Twitter experience. Following people on Twitter shouldn’t be taken lightly. You aren’t friends with everyone you meet, are you? Do you shake EVERYONE’S hand that you see? If you say yes I know you are lying so be honest for your own sake.
What’s my point?
My point is that you shouldn’t worry about how many people follow you and you shouldn’t focus on keeping those followers by following each and every one of them back. You should however follow people that you can connect with. People that have the same interests or people that seem social and fun for you to follow.
Also, you should never feel bad if you choose to stop following someone. It’s up to you who you wish to see in your Twitter stream so take control and happy following!

I don’t follow everybody who follows me – mostly because I don’t even know who follows me since I don’t read all the e-mails that Twitter sends when somebody follows me – but that’s because I use TweetAdder to grow my Twitter account, here’s a story on how I gained 500 targeted twitter followers in 5 days (it’s from january so it’s kinda old, I’m up to 16,000 followers now).

I don’t use Twitter for too many personal things, mostly just a way of communicating with a few people and tweeting my own blog updates and retweeting others.

PS: I think my previous comment might have went into your spam queue – usually they appear instantly on your site but the last one didn’t :( Could you please check? Thanks!

I choose to autofollow every person because I don’t have time to go through every single person who follows me. If I am not following someone back I can not engage with them in the future so I never had the opportunity to engage .I may have found something that peaked my interest in one of their tweets in the future.

With the coming of Twitter lists I don’t think it really matters to much because I can put the people I engaged with into a list and follow that particular stream when I am on tweeting.

I will occasionally go unfollow peeps who have not tweeted in months who most likely have given up on Twitter. I will also unfollow peeps that I see are spammers.

I don’t think there is any right or wrong when it comes to following peeps everyone has their own method to their madness. #justsayin

I try to take the time to visit each new follower’s stream/profile ….. by dedicating 5-10 mins. a day it helps me identify who I truly want to follow. Great point about it not being about the numbers Kim :)

I think the key is reading through the steam of someone that started following you before you decide to follow them.

Just as you would look at the stream and bio information to determine if it is spam, the same can be said about following someone. I’ll usually scroll through a couple of pages of their stream before deciding if I’ll follow them. If all they have to talk about is how good their grill cheese sandwich was for lunch, I probably won’t follow them.

i think its a bad idea to follow every one that follows you..if its within your niche then it would be fine

In other to strengthen my resolve not to follow back every Tom, Dick and Harry that follows me, I’ve deactivated the new follower email notification in my account. Now I only follow people I’m INTERESTED in following.
