Tweeting With Your Location

by Kim Randall on March 11, 2010

Google Buzz

So Twitter launched yet another feature “Tweet With Your Location“. I took some time to check it out and well, let me first explain to you what it is and how it works and then I’ll give you my opinion.

OK so as I logged onto Twitter today I was prompted with this pop-up about their new “Locations” feature.

Was I curious? Sure was!

First thing I did was click on the “Learn More” option to read up on it, so I do suggest you make a trip over to the “About the Tweet With Your Location Feature” blog post and do the same!

So after reading up I turned on the newest feature, ready to see all of it’s awesomeness. At least I believed it was going to be absolutely amazing.

Anyways, after choosing to turn the feature on I was prompted to confirm that I was indeed choosing to turn the feature on.

Twitter Locations

Once I confirmed I went to set my location which is where I quickly realized that I don’t think I will be using this feature too often. They do not have my location as an option and I am not finding a way to add it. Maybe I didn’t look hard enough (that does happen sometimes lol).

In all honesty though, there is no point in me Tweeting my location if it is incorrect, right?

Twitter Locations

I did go ahead and choose a location close enough to where I am just to test out the feature as shown below. You will notice that the Tweet now includes my “location” **incorrect or not it’s still there**

If you hover over the location you will then receive a pop-up Google Map of the area which is kinda cool, but to me nothing special.

To me FourSquare, Gowalla and BrightKite all seem to have this already down, but once again that’s my opinion.

Have you checked out the “Tweet Your Location” feature yet? If so what are your thoughts on it?

I checked it out, but didn’t actually test it. It is kind of cool, but I won’t be using it because I try not to post my location everywhere.

I’m not sure why would anyone tweet with location. Isn’t that too much info shared on public? For all the people I follow and the things I tweet, I don’t think a location is necessary. What do you think?

I can totally understand. The thing with the Twitter location is that it isn’t like a Foursquare where you are “checking in” to a location. I use those sites when I go out or meet people places, but once again you have to be smart on sharing your location.

Hi Kim,
Social media is something I am just beginning to include in my marketing so things like tweet location and their importance (or not) are not immediately obvious to me – my thought is “not”.
What I am sure of is that I’ll be a frequent visitor here.

Hi Valentina and thank you so much for stopping by my Blog. I agree that it probably is not very important at the stage in the game with the other geo targeting and “tweeting” sites that are already available. I would however like to think that this is the preview of something more amazing to come from Twitter. Only time will truly tell.

Well, I think in terms of corporate tweeting, Location feature is not really useful when it comes to Internet-only business or big Corporations. Though this feature is more about letting your friends or customers know where you are. That is how people can get more fun out of Twitter and local businesses more customers.

My verdict: it’s handy

I completely agree with the fact of Tweeting your location can be handy, but I will not be using the actual Twitter version to do so. FourSquare, Gowalla and BrightKite seem to be the ones to beat in this area. Thanks for stopping by and commenting!
